Berlo throws 1-hitter, Royals blank Carpinteria

In a matchup of two of the top softball pitchers in the area, San Marcos capitalized on a couple of Carpinteria errors and scored three runs off the Warriors’ Catalina Maldonado.

The Royals’ Kristen Berlo made them stand up with a 12-strikeout, one-hit performance in a 3-0 win.

Cierra Kephart singled in the top of the seventh to break up Berlo’s no-hitter.

Maldonado allowed six hits, but was hurt by the errors.

Berlo started the third with an infield hit and the Royals loaded the bases with Hannah Ball and Amy Medina reached base on consecutive error. Maldonado got  the second out, but Hannah Johnson had a swinging bunt and Berlo beat the tag at home plate for a 1-0 lead. Maria Perez singled to bring in Ball and Medina for a 3-0 advantage.

Berlo and Johnson added triples in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, but neither was able to score.

Berlo was 3 for 3 with a triple and a run scored, and Johnson was 2 for 3 with a triple and a RBI.

San Marcos is now 10-9 while Carpinteria is 17-4.
