Snyder just misses no-hitter in SBCC sweep

SBCC’s Kailey Snyder took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Tuesday afternoon, then settled for a one-hit shutout in the opener of a WSC softball doubleheader at Cuesta. The Vaqueros won 1-0 and 5-1 in San Luis Obispo to improve to 21-2 overall and 10-0 in the WSC Gold Division. They’ve won eight straight games and 20 of their last 21.

Snyder threw a three-hitter in the second game and the visitors got two hits and two RBIs from Lisa Zeitlin. The Vaqueros had 10 hits in the nightcap with Snyder, Zeitlin, Joan Cannon and Nicole Adair all collecting two apiece.

Snyder (19-2) struck out six in each game and had one walk in the nightcap. In the opener, she notched her fifth one-hitter and ninth shutout. The run she allowed in the second game was unearned.

In the first game, she retired the first 12 batters in order. Snyder was helped out by her catcher Stephanie Bolanos, who threw out a runner trying to steal in the fifth and first baseman Jasmyne Holmes, who started a double play with two runners on in the seventh.

Karen Berna pitched a four-hitter for Cuesta (9-17, 4-6) in the opener with four strikeouts. Santa Barbara scored the game’s only run in the third when Carly Smith singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a groundout. Joan Cannon drove in Smith with an RBI single through the left side.

“The first game was a real battle,” said coach Paula Congleton. “In the second game, we were focused at the plate and very patient.”
