Royals beaten by Ventura in wind-swept track meet

The windy conditions excited the sprinters, but it wasn’t so much fun for the other event competitors at the Channel League track meet in Ventura on Wednesday.

The host Cougars swept San Marcos, winning 93-74 in the boys competition and 93-74 in the girls dual.

“We were all over the track,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “We didn’t do so much in the field events. We just ran our hearts out.”

For the boys, the Royals swept the 100 meters, with all the runners setting wind-aided PRs. Andrew Thayer won in 10.93, Randee Harvey was second in 10.98 and Dillon Kraus took third in 11.33.

San Marcos withstood a brutal headwind in the backstretch to win the 4×100 relay in 44.21.

In the field events, Shane Rowan took first in the triple jump (41-4) and long jump (21-11).

Hannah McDaniel was a triple winner, taking the 400 (59.65), 200 (PR of 25.91) and the high jump (5-0). She also ran on the winning 4×400 relay. Elysia Hodges won the 100 in 12.43 and the 300 hurdles in 45.20 and took second in the 100 hurdles in 16.61. She also was part of the winning 4×100 relay.

Marie Brashears ran 2:24.37 to take first in the 800 and Annie Thwing surprised her coach with a second-place finish in the mile in 5:22.

“We ran as hard as we could and came up short,” Hantgin said. “Ventura has a great program, and it’s tough to break in there.”
