Neushul, Chargers look ready for league finals

Dos Pueblos’ girls swim team heads into the league finals with an undefeated record of 4-0 after beating Santa Barbara 117-66 in a Channel League dual meet on Tuesday.

Kiley Neushul gave Dos Pueblos a huge lift with first-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She also earned an automatic CIF qualification time as the lead leg for the first-place 400 freestyle relay team (Kiley Neushul, Emily Swindle, Janelle Nguyen, Emily Rose Williams).

Janelle Nguyen placed first in both the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, while Maelyn Adornetto finished second in both the 200IM and the 100 breaststroke.

Santa Barbara’s girls were led by Kelsey O’Brien, who won the 50 and 100 free in CIF automatic times. Lizzie Casier achieved CIF consideration times in finishing second in the 100 fly and 500 free. Sophie Trabucco also met a CIF consideration time in her second-place finish in the 200 free.

“Santa Barbara had some really fast swims, but again, it was the depth that our team has that really enabled us to get the win. I am really proud of the girls and what truly was a team effort,” said DP coach Leslie Wiggins Roth.

In the boys meet, Dos Pueblos won 111-75.

Josh Pighetti met CIF consideration times in winning the 200 IM (2:03.46) and 100 backstroke (58.86) for Dos Pueblos. He also swam on the winning medley relay team.

Theo Coyne also won two events, taking the 50 freestyle in 23.08 and 100 free in 49.99.

For Santa Barbara, Mark Davis swam 1:49.4 to win the 200 free in a CIF consideration time, and he finished second in the 100 free. Tarry Burkhardt captured the 100 breast.

Davis and Burkhardt joined Evan Robertson and Colin Fristoe on the winning 200 free relay team, clocking a CIF considertion time of 1:32.50.

Divers Sarah Rushton, Mattea Stalie, and Rachel Smitth finished first, second and third for the Charger girls, and the 200 medley teams placed both first (Kiley Neushul, Maelyn Adornetto, Janelle Nguyen, Emily Rose Williams) and second (Madison Faulkner, Cayley Cruickshank, Emily Swindle, Kate Evans) for the day.

Swindle finished first in the 100 butterfly.

Channel League prelims are on Tuesday for the girls and Wednesday for the boys at Ventura High.
