Local track and field stars to face the best at Arcadia

Dos Pueblos has four athletes competing in the Arcadia Multi-Events competition, the prelude to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational track and field meet.

Jim Lagattuta and Waiman Meinhold are five events into the decathlon, while Jessica Escalante and Stamatia Scarvelis are doing the heptathlon.

Elite performers from DP, San Marcos and Santa Barbara will test themselves against top competition in the track meet on Friday and Saturday. Arcadia traditionally invites many of the best prep track and field athletes in the country.

On the first day of the heptathlon, Scarvelis scored 2,294 points in four events. She won her specialty, the shot put, with a throw of 37-0.5. Her other marks were 28.17 in the 200 meters, 17.61 in the 100 hurdles and 4-7.75 in the high jump.

Escalante compiled 1,972 points. Her best event was the 200, where she finished ninth in 26.46. Her other marks were 18.78 in the 100 hurdles, 4-2 in the high jump and 27-6.50 in the shot put.

In the decathlon, Lagattuta has 2,853 points after five events. He won the shot put at 47-01.50 and took ninth in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.75. His other results were 12.20 in the 100 meters, 18-10.50 in the long jump and 59.28 in the 400.

Meinhold finished seventh in the long jump (19-11.75) and shot put (37-0.50). He ran 12.32 in the 100, 58.34 in the 400 and cleared 5-3.75 in the high jump for a five-event total of 2,709 points.

Dos Pueblos has eight athletes competing in individual events. Friday night, Alfred Scott runs in the 3200 and Ellen Sanden competes in the triple jump.

On Saturday, Bryan Fernandez runs in the Rising Stars Mile, Jacob Bartholomew and Graham Ashby run the seeded 800, Sergey Sushchikh runs in the seeded 3200, Stamatia Scarvelis throws in the seeded girls shot put and Nick Scarvelis throws in the invitational shot put and discus. Scarvelis is the No. 1 shot putter in the state.

San Marcos is sending three relay teams and four individual performers.

On Friday night, the Royals’ 4×800 girls relay team (Annie Thwing, Kaitlin Kuehn, Marie Brashears, Elysia Hodges) and the boys sprint medley relay (Randee Harvey, Dillan Krause, Phil David, Tristan Lake) will run in seeded races.

Shane Rowan is entered in the triple jump, Lake in the 300 hurdles and Hodges in the girls 300 hurdles. In the invitational division, Hannah McDaniel is competing in the high jump, and the girls 4×400 relay (Hodges, Brashears, McDaniel, Kaylin Koopmans) will test itself against elite competition like Long Beach Poly and Serra.

Santa Barbara has two entries: distance runner Briggs Deardorff in the mile and  Robert Palmer in the seeded 110 hurdles.
