Bishop spikers can’t chop down Oaks

Outside hitter, Robert Connolly goes up for a kill against Oaks Christian.

A slow start hampered the Bishop Diego boys volleyball team on Tuesday as the Cardinals fell to visiting sixth-ranked Oaks Christian 25-11, 25-14, 25-27, 25-17.

Middle blocker Chris Helkey pounded seven kills with three blocks, and also had a key diving shot that saved the Cardinals late in the third set.

“Chris was a late addition because he made a run with the basketball team and also got sick afterwards, but I really liked what I saw out of him tonight,” said coach Jason Donnelly. “We have to refine his game a bit, but he’s definitely a presence in the middle.”

Nic Mon had eight kills and passed well. Donnelly also said that the junior took some of his best swings of the season in the match.

The Cardinals (8-5, 2-1 TVL) trailed 19-21 in the third set before roaring back. They host Malibu on Thursday.
