UCSB’s Peterson finishes 22nd in NCAA 100 freestyle

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Junior Chris Peterson placed 22nd in the 100 freestyle during
Saturday’s preliminaries at the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in
Minneapolis, Minn. The event was Peterson’s second at the championship; he tied for 21st in
the 50 free on Thursday.

Peterson finished the 100 free in 43.37 seconds, which was just .02 seconds slower than his
school-record time swam at the Pac-10 Championships earlier this month. He failed to
qualify for the event’s consolation final by .30 seconds, but finished three spots higher than
his seed into the event.

The 100 free was Peterson’s final event during his first NCAA appearance. He was the lone
Gaucho to qualify for the championship and helped UCSB extend its streak to six consecutive
years with at least one swimmer representing the school at the national championships.
