SBCC can’t keep pace with Santa Monica

Undefeated Santa Monica won two three-set matches in singles and a close No. 1 doubles to defeat SBCC 7-2 on Friday in a women’s tennis match at Pershing Park.

The Corsairs (8-0, 6-0) captured five of six singles to improve to 16-0 in WSC matches over the last two years. Kendra Ross won at No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles with Betsy Sauer for the Vaqueros (6-3, 4-2).

Nicci Yvanovich dropped a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles and Amy Sagraves fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Yvanovich and Sagraves, the Vaqueros’ No. 1 doubles team, also suffered a narrow 9-7 setback.

“If we win those three, we win the match,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Kendra played great. That was the best I’ve seen her play in doubles all season.”

The Vaqueros host Glendale on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
