Royals show toughness in comeback over SLO

San Marcos showed it could handle some adversity on Wednesday night.

The Royals bounced back from a first-game loss and beat San Luis Obispo 16-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 in a non-league boys volleyball match at home.

“(San Luis Obispo) came out on fire, clearly, and set us back a little bit,” San Marcos coach Roger Kuntz said. “We were down 21-17 in game 3 and fought back to win that one.”

The Royals (11-1) got a good performance from setter Neil Holliday, who handed out 43 assists. Jackson Kunz and Zach Yinger carried the offensive load with 20 and 17 kills, respectively.

San Marcos also got a nice game from Ben McKenzie, who was making his first start in the middle. He finished with three kills and three solo blocks.

Spencer Johnson and Kevin Hempy each added four kills.

Kuntz was pleased how his team performed against a good opponent.

“After the evening was over I felt much better (about my team) going into league,” he said.

The Royals (11-1) play in the Dos Pueblos Invitational on Saturday at UCSB.
