Royals come up short in Channel League opener

San Marcos hit into three double plays and came out on the short end of a 3-1 decision at Ventura in the Channel League baseball opener on Friday.

Ventura capitalized on three errors to score two runs in the first inning.

The Royals got one run back in the third. They loaded the bases and Joe Prince scored when Jimmy Brakka hit into a double play.

San Marcos got a good pitching performance from Will Proctor. In his first start, he allowed three hits, walked four and hit a batter.

Proctor was unlucky at the plate. He hit a ball up the middle with the bases loaded, but Ventura’s shortstop was playing that way and made the play to deny the Royals a big inning.

The Royals play at Santa Barbara on Tuesday

San Marcos…001 000 0 — 1 5 3

Ventura…200 100 x — 3 3 1

Proctor and Moore; Griffith and Morton. W—Griffith. L—Proctor 0-1.

2B—V: Morton.

I love your website but I am not sure if someone from your publication was at the game. I have two runs scored by Ventura on two errors in the first inning. The first run was scored by a balk.after a throwing error by the SM catcher after two walks by Proctor. I have the second run earned after a single up the middle by the Ventura catcher. The run would have scored from second even though the runner was on third so it is earned. I have two double plays, one in the 3rd on a 6-4-3 and a second on a popped up bunt with a U1-4 double play. I am not sure where you have the third one from. I have the game essentially dominated by the Ventura pitcher throwing a 1 hitter, with SM in the game because of the 6 errors commited by the Ventura defense.
