Oxnard spoils home opener for San Marcos

Oxnard’s Jay Valades held San Marcos to a pair of hits in leading the Yellowjackets to a 7-1 baseball win, spoiling the Royals’ home opener on Friday.

Retired San Marcos baseball coach Joe Mueller throws out the first pitch before the Royals' season opener.

Before the game, San Marcos held a ceremony to dedicate the field to long-time coach Joe Mueller. He threw out the first pitch.

The Royals scored in the first inning, but Oxnard tied it in the third and erupted for five runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Oxnard’s Valdes struck out five in six innings of work. He also scored a run.

Jimmy Brakka had a double for the Royals, who are back in action today at Birmingham High.

Ghazaleh Sailors of San Marcos is scheduled to pitch against Birmingham’s female pitcher Marti Sementelli in what is believed to be the first time two girls have pitched against each other in a high school varsity baseball game.
