Morton makes the difference for Dons

James Morton played the role of unlikely hero in Tuesday’s Channel League golf matchup between Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos at Glen Annie Golf Club.

Morton’s round of 81 was the deciding factor in a victory for the Dons, which came only after the match ended in a 379-379 tie.

Morton had only the sixth-best score from Santa Barbara, but it was slightly better than the Chargers’ sixth score, which broke the deadlock.

“DP played fantastic today, they gave us all we could handle,” said Dons head coach James Bedard. “I think everyone wearing a SB shirt was fortunate to walk away with a win.”

Carson Curtis was the day’s medalist thanks to a round of one-over 72. Other Chargers under 80 included Brett Patton (74), Brant Amerson (75) and Michael Yi (78).

Mickey Kirby put together Santa Barbara’s best round at 73 and Spencer Mikles was right behind at 74. Jonathan Collins carded a 75.

The slim decision was pivitol in the Channel League standings, as Santa Barbara improves to 3-0 while the Chargers fall back to 1-1.

Depending on weather conditions, both schools are scheduled to compete again on Thursday.
