San Marcos got strong play from its middle attackers and swept Santa Ynez 25-14, 25-20, 25-17, in a non-league boys volleyball match Tuesday in Santa Ynez.

“We got improvement out of our middles,” San Marcos coach Roger Kuntz said. “We got three solo blocks each and five kills each from Will Candy and Kevin Hempy.”

The coach also praised the setting of Neal Holliday.

San Marcos alum and Olympic gold medalist Todd Rogers was in the stands to watch the match.

He saw the Royals put up some big blocks to thwart the Santa Ynez attack.

“I thought we were a little up and down tonight, but at times we got some real good blocking, not just from our middles but out of our strong front-row players,” said Kuntz.

The Royals (3-0) play at Arcadia on Thursday.
