Dons show good balance in season-opening win

Santa Barbara tuned up for a marquee home opener against second-ranked Mira Costa by beating Harvard Westlake on the road Tuesday in four games. The scores were 25-17, 25-14, 23-25, 25-12.

The Dons will play the powerful Mustangs on Friday night.

“This will be a great test for us to start out the season,” said coach Chad Arneson.

Outside hitter Alex Biedul led a balanced Santa Barbara attack with 10 kills. In the middle, Holden Ploch and Sam Cohen put away nine and eight kills, respectively. Casey Slaught was a force at the net with six kills and five blocks.

Setter Gavin Trudeau spread the wealth with 39 assists. On defense, senior libero Mark Outwater picked up 11 digs.
