Cardinal spikers win pool in SLO

A nail-biting victory capped off a long but successful day for the Bishop Diego boys volleyball team on Friday, as the Cardinals went undefeated in pool play at the San Luis Obispo Tournament.

Nic Mon put away a kill to seal a 25-22, 23-25, 17-16 win over Arroyo Grande which included a late comeback in the final frame. Brandon Gonzalez came up with some key digs down the stretch and Robert Connelly made some big swings on the left side.

“We were the last ones playing in the gym today, and we were able to maintain our energy and gut it out. That’s what you want to see in these early season tournaments. We’re getting better every match,” said coach Jason Donnelly.

Gonzalez had four aces in the previous match, a 25-14, 25-12 decision over Mission Prep. In the first match of the day, Johnny Brand had nine kills in a 26-27, 25-12, 15-7 win over Hueneme. As a team, the Cardinals posted eight aces in the contest.

“At this level the elements of serving and passing are so vital, and the guys are starting to see that right away. When we serve tough, we’re a tough team to play,” said Donnelly, who highlighted the play of Michael Winnewisser at the middle blocker position.

The Cardinals (4-1) start play in the Gold Division playoff bracket on Saturday morning.
