Bishop plays tough in close games, beats Santa Ynez

Bishop Diego posted a confidence-building win Wednesday night, beating Santa Ynez in four games, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23.

“Our guys fought tonight,” Bishop coach Jason Donnelly said. “It was good to get close-game experience. We played well at the end of each game.”

Johnny Brand had a big night with 22 kills and 10 digs, and setter James Fazio dished out 44 assists.

Donnelly also liked the play of Brandon Gonzalez. He had six kills and 11 digs.

“Any coach would love to coach an athlete like Brandon,” said Donnelly.

“I’m happy with the way we played tonight,” he added. “The guys are learning. Confidence is a big key for the team. They appreciate working hard and learning how to compete. They didn’t get rattled in the close games. To come out on top is a big confidence booster, and hopefully it will spring-board us to the next level.”
