Bishop headed to Fresno for state tourney opener

Bishop Diego is still playing basketball in March.

The Cardinals, who lost to Valley Torah on Saturday in the CIF Division 6AA final, received a berth in the Division 5 CIF State Basketball Tournament on Sunday. They will travel to Fresno Christian on Tuesday for a first-round game.

The winner draws top-seeded Sierra Canyon on Tuesday.

Bishop will take a 22-5 record to the Central Valley to play Fresno Christian, which has a record below .500, 13-17. The team, however, is on a roll in the postseason. It won its third Central Section title in school history last Friday.

Brady Lee, an accomplished magician and a gutsy player at a 5-foot-8, 127-pounds, leads Fresno Christian. The junior point guard delivered 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and five steals in a rout over No. 3 Tranquillity, 74-53, for the Division V championship.

Fresno Christian, which won previous section crowns in 1992 and ’97, played only three D-V teams all season. And it saw nothing but D-IV opposition in a WSL won by Caruthers.

The kids are playing hard nosed basketball. If they only had a coach who knew how to control a game…
Good luck Bishop Diego in the State Tournament.

    • low blow to a coach who led the school to the finals for the first year in school history… must be doing something right. Good luck up in Fresno, awesome that they make State tourney!

Good luck boys a. How about supervised the team? Did you see any games?

    • A handful of games… I am aware of their league title, and the tourney championship in Santa Ynez as well. Bishop is a great team that plays together night in and night out. They were pretty good at closing games out… with a 9-3 record of games decided by 10 points or less. If you really want stats look at their league games, they won by an average of 14.5 points per game. High school basketball is about the kids and the games that I saw this year showed remarkable team sportsmanship and unity…. I think the coach may have had something to do with that too.

    • say what? Veritas, please stop dissing a great coach and a great person who the boys look up to and admire. What’s up? Sour grapes?

CIF Division 5 must be a real strong division if a team with a losing record makes the state playoffs. 13 wins and 17 losses? And they made the state playoffs? Division 5 must have been scrambling to get teams to play in the state tourney. Lucky for Bishop they are playing such a weak team in a weak division.

Fresno Christian won the Central Section of their CIF Division, hence why they are in the State Tournament.

ABCD-The team lost big leads their past 4 games, did nothing strategically to stop runs by teams with less talent, and split those past 4 games 2/2. By definition that is not finishing games. Against Shalhavat, not only did they lose a big lead, but lucked out when the opponent made critical unforced errors which allowed the game to go into double overtime.
