Snyder pitches Vaqueros to sweep over Oxnard

Kailey Snyder went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in SBCC’s 4-0 softball shutout of Oxnard on Thursday and Lisa Zeitlin was 3-3 with a single, double and triple in the second game, leading the Vaqueros to a 10-2 victory and a WSC Gold Division sweep at Pershing Park. Zeitlin drove in three runs in the second game, which was shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.

Snyder tossed a three-hitter and a two-hitter as the Vaqueros extended their best start in school history to 12-1. They’re a perfect 4-0 in conference and have won a school-record 11 straight games.

The Vaqueros improved to 4-0 at home by piling up 14 runs on 15 hits, including four doubles, a triple and two homers. Snyder, who’s batting .514, belted her second homer in the opener — a two-run shot in the sixth that followed a single by Carly Smith. Snyder also had an RBI double during a two-run first inning.
Smith was 2-3 with an RBI double in the opener.

Snyder (12-1) threw just 77 pitches in the first game with seven strikeouts and no walks en route to her fifth shutout. She gave up two straight hits to open the fourth but was helped out by the twins — Joan and Laura Cannon. Joan fielded the leadoff hit in center field and fired a strike to her sister Laura at shortstop, who tagged out the runner at second base.

Snyder allowed a two-run homer to Janai Shaw in the first inning of the nightcap, then retired the next 10 in order. She struck out four and didn’t walk a batter while lowering her ERA to 0.60.

In the second game, Stephanie Bolanos evened the score at 2-2 with a second-inning single that scored Jasmyne Holmes and Zeitlin, who had doubled.

Laura Cannon hit her first homer, a two-run blast to center, in the third after Snyder was intentionally walked to lead off the inning. Zeitlin added an RBI triple and scored on an infield error to make it 6-2.

“I’m just trying to stay as consistent as I can,” said Zeitlin, a sophomore third baseman from Calabasas. “I felt like I was focusing a little more in the second game. I felt really comfortable

“This is such a special team. It’s really a pleasure to have Kailey pitching so well, our defense playing so well and we’re practicing hard every day in our nice new (batting) cages.”
