‘Hurricane’ Snyder blows away Hancock

Kailey Snyder beat Hancock twice to improve to 16-2

Kailey Snyder returned to her hometown in grand style on Thursday, posting two pitching wins and hitting a home run in SBCC’s softball sweep of Hancock in Santa Maria. The scores were 12-7 and 12-0 with the second game stopped after five innings by the eight-run mercy rule.

Snyder, a sophomore from St. Joseph High who’s known as ‘The Hurricane,’ pitched a seven-hitter and a two-hitter. She struck out nine with one walk in the opener and fanned six with a walk in the nightcap.

She hit her third homer in the opener — a solo shot in the fifth — and improved her pitching record to 16-2. It was the fourth straight win and 16th in 17 games for the Vaqueros (17-2, 8-0), the only unbeaten team in the WSC Gold Division.

Santa Barbara has scored 34 runs in three games this week.

Laura Cannon was 3-4 with two RBIs in the first game and Lisa Zeitlin and Joan Cannon each had two hits and an RBI. The Vaqueros built a 12-4 led after 4½ innings but the Bulldogs (7-16, 2-7) took advantage of two errors to score three times in the fifth and extend the game.

In the second game, second baseman Mariah Coyazo went 3-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Snyder threw 60 pitches (46 for strikes) and faced 17 batters, just two over the minimum.

SBCC scored six runs in the second inning, thanks to a two-run double from Snyder and an RBI double by Jasmyne Holmes.

The Vaqueros will play a home doubleheader on Saturday vs. El Camino at 11 a.m. and Pasadena at 1 p.m.
