Wong’s treys spark SBCC; Vaqueros headed to playoffs

Janelle Wong drained four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes and scored a career-high 19 points Saturday night as SBCC beat Cuesta 70-51 in its regular-season women’s basketball finale at San Luis Obispo.

The Vaqueros (20-10, 7-5 WSC North) won their third straight to make the 18-team Southern Cal Regional for the sixth straight year. They expect to be seeded 16th or 17th. If they’re No. 16, they’ll be at home against L.A. Trade Tech on Wednesday at 7 p.m. If they’re No. 17, they’ll travel to Chaffey in Rancho Cucamonga.

The playoff pairings will be announced on Monday.

SBCC built an 18-5 lead out of the gate and piled up 10 3-pointers (in 27 attempts) for the second straight game. Cuesta shot 28 percent and missed all 14 of its 3-point tries.

Wong made 5-of-11 field goals, including 4-10 from 3-point land. She was a perfect 5-5 on free throws in the second half when her team converted 17-22.

Imelda Bealer added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Vaqueros, who hit 8-18 from long range in the first half while building a 37-19 advantage. Nanice Kollee hit two treys and scored eight points on a night when six different Vaqueros made triples.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence,” said coach Sandrine Krul, who’s guided her team to four 20-win seasons in the last six years. “We did a great job of pulling together after losing three straight. I’m really proud of this group.”
