Warriors go cold in 2nd half, lose at Laguna Beach

After jumping out to a 10-point first-quarter lead, Carpinteria struggled to make shots and wound up losing a 54-45 decision at Laguna Beach in a CIF Division 4-A boys basketball playoff game Wednesday night.

“They could not stop Myles Menegon and Andrew Sova,” Carpinteria coach Johnny Ward said of his team’s early success.

Laguna Beach changed to a zone defense in the second quarter and stymied the Warriors. They were held to five points in the quarter but still led 22-19 at halftime.

In the second half, the Breakers double teamed Menegon, and Carpinteria’s offense sputtered.

“They made runs that we weren’t able to handle. We didn’t knock down shots and they did,” said Ward.

“We gave them a gut check right at the beginning. The made their shots and they took over,” he added.

Menegon led the Warriors with 10 points, while Sova added eight and Paul Aguilar seven.

Carpinteria finished the season at 14-12.
