Vaqueros go long distance to beat Hancock

SBCC turned in one of its best games of the conference season on Wednesday night, draining 10-of-30 from 3-point land in an 86-60 women’s basketball triumph over Hancock.

Freshman Brooke Amenta scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, when the Vaqueros outscored the visitors 48-33. Janelle Wong nailed 5-12 from long distance and scored 15 points while Lyndsay Bergus had 14.

Amenta, Wong and Bergus all had five rebounds on “Fight Cancer Night” at the Sports Pavilion. Imelda Bealer (9 boards) and Brooke Berry (7) helped SBCC to a 49-29 advantage in rebounds.

The Vaqueros (19-10, 6-5 WSC North) broke open a tight game with a 16-2 run midway through the first half. A layup by Nanice Kollee (11 points, 3 steals) and a reverse layup by Amenta stretched the margin to 31-14 with 5:33 to go before halftime.

“We put in two plays to open up our shooting and that gave us confidence,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “Tonight felt really good and we haven’t felt like that in a long time. I was just happy they were playing hard and rebounding really well.”

Camille Zumbro had 25 points for Hancock (9-16, 3-8).

The Bulldogs got within 10 with just under 11 minutes to play before the Vaqueros put together another 16-2 burst. A follow shot by Kollee gave the home team a comfortable 75-51 advantage with seven minutes to play.

SBCC hit 33 percent from the field while holding the Bulldogs to 21 percent. They outscored them 30-9 from 3-point country.

The Vaqueros finish up WSC play on Saturday with a 5 p.m. game at Cuesta. Krul says a victory would vault her team into the playoffs for a sixth straight year. It would also give Krul her fourth 20-win season in the last six years.
