San Marcos battles Dos Pueblos to scoreless draw

Royals goalie Hannah Harrah makes one of her 17 saves, this one point blank, to preserve the shut out and tie with DP

A change in formation helped San Marcos fight off Dos Pueblos and hold the Chargers to a scoreless draw in a Channel League girls soccer match on Tuesday.

Jillian Hirsch of San Marcos advances the ball up field during 0-0 tie with Dos Pueblos.

“We got our first point in our last game,” said a happy San Marcos coach Lloyd Biggs. “It was a great performance by the girls as a team.”

Biggs had the Royals playing in 4-1-4-1, with Caroline Vance playing in a sweeper-type role behind the four midfielders and in front of the back line.

“The formation helped. We were much more compact. The attitude was ‘Let’s not give a goal away.’”

Dos Pueblos pushed hard to get a goal in the second half, but the Royals held firm. Goalkeeper Hannah Harrah was superb. She made 17 saves.

“We rode our luck a little bit,” Biggs said. “It was a great performance. We needed good performances from everyone and we got it. Everyone performed to their maximum potential.”

The Royals finished 0-7-1 in league, while DP will enter the CIF playoffs as the league runner-up at 5-2-1.
