San Diego shuts out Gauchos

UCSB men’s tennis dropped to 1-4 on the season after being swept 6-0 in its home opener against No. 47 University of San Diego Saturday.

Coming off a win against No. 62 Troy the Gauchos looked to build momentum against the Toreros, but failed to register an individual match victory for the fourth time this season.

At No.1 singles Alex Konigsfeldt once again played well against a highly ranked opponent pushing #31 ranked Dean Jackson to three sets before ultimately losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Benjamin Recknagle won the first set of his match at No. 2, but could not keep the pace falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

“We did not have a great week of practice and we suffered the consequences,” said head coach Marty Davis. “We have a week off from matches to get it right.”

Doubles matches were abandoned after USD clinched the victory.

The Gauchos’ next match is Saturday, Feb. 19 at UC Davis beginning at 1 p.m.
