Girls basketball teams forced to travel

Seven of the area’s eight high school girls basketball programs have reached the postseason, with the first round of competition coming Thursday.

Six of the seven teams will be traveling for first-round games, while Cate was given a home game against Calvary Chapel to start.

Bishop Diego holds the highest seed of any local team, entering the Division V-A playoffs as the No. 3 seed. The Cardinals will travel to Pomona Catholic. Laguna Blanca is matched up against No. 2 Chadwick in the same division.

Channel League schools Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos both compete in Division II-A. The Dons, who finished third in league, hold the No. 5 seed and will travel to Kennedy. At-large qualifier Dos Pueblos must face St. Mary’s Academy for the chance to play top-seeded Harvard-Westlake in the second round.

Providence Hall reached the postseason in its first year of eligibility. The freelance Lions will take on Coast Union in the first round of the Division VI-AA playoff. Cate, hosting Calvary Chapel, is also competing in the Division VI-AA bracket.

Carpinteria, which finished third in the Frontier League, drew 12th-seeded Marymount in Division IV-A’s first round.
