Gauchos glued down by Santa Clara

The No. 60-ranked UCSB men’s tennis team concluded its three-match road trip with a 5-2 loss to No. 65-ranked Santa Clara Monday.

“We were hoping to win this one and have momentum coming home,” said head coach Marty Davis. “We didn’t get it done and they outplayed us on the day.”

The Gauchos will now return home for a seven match home stand beginning with a non-conference bout against San Diego State on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Santa Barbara came out of the gates strong wrestling the doubles point away from the Broncos behind impressive performance at courts No. 2 and No. 3. Benjamin Recknagle and Mathieu Forget clinched the point for the Gauchos defeating Tom Pham and Maxime Armengaud 8-6.

In singles, the Gauchos struggled for the second consecutive day dropping five of the six matches. Recknagle was the lone bright spot at court No.2 as he bounced back from a dubious first set to defeat Armengaud 1-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The Gauchos next match against San Diego State begins at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center Courts on campus.
