Emerson, Dons control boards and Chargers

Tess Emerson of Santa Barbara manuevers inside to score two of her 31 points against DP.

Santa Barbara took advantage of Talitha Draper’s absence for Dos Pueblos, as Tess Emerson poured in 31 points and the Dons dominated the backboards in posting a 62-49 Channel League victory on Thursday night at Sovine Gym.

“Talitha did not play, so we did a number on the boards,” Santa Barbara coach Andy Butcher said. “They’re not big without her.”

Emerson took full advantage. She made 13 of 22 shots and grabbed 14 rebounds

“Tess just killed us,” said DP coach Jelani Hicks.

Riley Lloyd grabbed 14 boards to go with her eight points, Zoe Echternacht had seven rebounds and Desirea Coleman six.

The Dons outrebounded DP 48-26.

Dos Pueblos' Chiara DiMarco goes up for a shot against Santa Barbara

“They didn’t have an inside game, so we came out on their outside shots and we got a lot of rebounds,” explained Butcher of the wide rebound advantage.

Jessica Escalante scored 15 points, Jasmine Mata had 11 points, Kristen Gowdy nine and Chiara Dimarco eight for DP (15-9, 1-6).

Lloyd, Ivette Gil and Sylvia Hoover all scored eight points for the Dons (17-8. 5-2).

“Santa Barbara played very hard,” Hicks said. “We weren’t able to match their efforts.”
