DP holds off San Marcos; feels good heading into playoffs

Ivan Luna scored in the 75th minute to lift Dos Pueblos to a 2-1 boys soccer victory over San Marcos in a physical Goleta Valley Derby at Valley Stadium on Tuesday night.

The teams got into a skirmish at the end of the match.

“Give a lot of credit to San Marcos, they played really hard,” said Dos Pueblos coach Tovi Eliasen. “It was an impressive performance by them.

“This was a great game to take with us before CIF.”

The Chargers will go into the Division 1 playoffs as the No. 3 team in the Channel League.

Nicky Neumann put DP ahead in the 12th minute. Chris Castillo hit a long free kick that was flicked by Ivan Luna to an onrushing Neumann, who touched the ball around the defense and the goalkeeper to score.

“It was the best-case scenario on how you want things to work,” said Eliasen.

San Marcos capitalized on slip by a DP defender, and Dillan Kraus scored the tying goal in the 19th minute.

Luna scored the game-winner off an assist by Johnny Fisher. It was his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

“I thought the guys gave a good, complete effort,” Eliasen said. “We’re happy to get the win. I like the way we played.”

He praised the passing of Fisher and the play of outside midfielder Vicente Perez.

The Chargers will enter next week’s playoffs with a 17-5-2 record (5-3 in league). Last year, they finished the year (postseason included) at 17-7-7.

“We’re happy where we’re at,” Eliasen said. “I really liked the way we played today.”

  1. I am sick of these ridiculously biased articles. They are complete trash and don’t reflect the game accurately one bit. Why don’t you try giving San Marcos some credit for once. Maybe if you actually did your job and attended the games by getting off your lazy ass you would be able to tell first hand. This game was very close, you are giving DP way too much credit. Why don’t you try mentioning some San Marcos names for once too, especially considering that the goal by DILLON KRAUS tied the game up for 56 minutes. DP led the game for a total of 12 minutes, which is only 15% of the game. Absolute bs that you don’t give much credit to San Marcos.

    • Calm down Soccerman, San Marcos lost. I heard they played dirty too. You should be glad none of that was posted up. This article doesnt make San Marcos look good, and it doesnt make them look bad either.
