Bishop gives strong effort in loss to Santa Clara

Bishop Diego made Santa Clara’s 6-4 star Keiana Vines work hard for her 29 points in a 61-31 loss to the Saints in a Frontier League girls basketball game Tuesday night.

“They definitely made her work for it,” said a proud Bishop coach Jeff Burich. “There were times we frustrated her a little.”

The Cardinals were down 40-11 at halftime, but they came out strong in the third quarter.

“I told the kids it’s all about their defensive effort,” Burich said. “The third quarter was the best quarter we played all year long.”

He said his team stepped up the tempo and tired out Vines.

“I can’t fault the kids’ effort,” said Burich.

Kelsey Stimson scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Cardinals (11-12, 2-7). Allison Breuer had eight points, 9 rebounds and two blocks of shots by Vines.
