It might not have been the No. 1 team, but it felt just as good for Carpinteria’s boys soccer team.
The Warriors opened up Tri-Valley League play on Monday with a 3-0 shutout of Oaks Christian, which lost its No. 1 ranking earlier in the day when the new CIF polls were released.
The Lions fell from the top position to No. 7. The Warriors also lost standing, falling out of the polls from No. 10 in CIF Division V.
Not that the rankings matter on the field, where the Warriors scored all three goals in the second half – two by Ismael Soriano.
Oscar Montes played only 15 minutes because of injury, but scored the Warriors’ second goal of the day.
“Even though he’s hurt, he’s still a threat for us,” said Carpinteria assistant coach Adrian Martinez.
Montes was set up by Ramiro Vega while both of Soriano’s goals were unassisted, the second on a penalty kick that he created. All three came in a 10-minute span, starting six minutes after halftime.
Erik Rojas recorded the shutout against a dangerous Oaks Christian side.
“Oaks Christian wasn’t afraid to shoot,” Martinez said.
Carpinteria (7-1-3, 1-0) takes on Santa Clara at home on Wednesday and the Lions (0-1-1 TVL) travel to Malibu the same day.
