Ward’s 1000-meter swim recognized

UCSB freshman Andrea Ward earned a pair of weekly honors after her standout performance in the 1,000 freestyle during the Gauchos’ dual meet against West Virginia on New Year’s Eve. Ward was selected as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimmer of the Week and was also named the UCSBgauchos.com Gaucho of the Week.

The San Leandro, Calif. native posted the second fastest time in UCSB history in the 1,000 free, touching the wall in 10:06.32. She just missed the school record, which was set by Tabitha Bonney in 1990 (10:05.70). Ward took first in the 1,000 free and then claimed second place in the 500 free (4:59.01) to help lead the Gauchos to the dual win over the Highlanders.

UCSB will be back in action on Saturday when they head to USC for a dual meet with the Trojans at noon.
