San Marcos gives No. 10 Fountain Valley a scare

San Marcos gave 10th-ranked Fountain Valley a battle before falling short, 10-8, in a non-league girls water polo game at Ocean View High on Thursday.

“We were within one goal when Alex (Brown) blocked a shot and the ball dribbled into the cage with 1:15 to go,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said. “That put us in scramble mode.”

The Royals got some good looks in the last minute, but couldn’t convert.

“We missed 26 shots in the game and shot 36 times, which is amazing for us,” Roth said. “We tried to shoot perfectly and overshot a lot of balls.”

Rose Koper and Hannah Koper each scored three goals for the Royals, and Brown had 10 saves and two steals.

Despite the loss, Roth said the team showed great improvement from its last meeting with the Barons.

“We lost 9-5 earlier in the season, so we improved on that. The kids have a lot to be proud of. They played pretty well.”
