Raiders rush past visiting Vaqueros, 78-66

SBCC couldn’t keep up with Moorpark in the second half Wednesday night and dropped a 78-66 women’s basketball decision on the road in its WSC North opener.

Freshman Brooke Amenta had a season-high 24 points and five rebounds for the 19th-ranked Vaqueros (13-6, 0-1) while Lyndsay Bergus had 15 points and seven boards. Amenta hit 9-15 from the field but the rest of the team struggled at 23.5 percent (12-51).

Coach Sandrine Krul was impressed with the effort of Amenta, who took a charge with five seconds to play and suffered a concussion. Krul said the 5-10 forward is expected to miss a week.

The Raiders (10-5, 1-0) avenged a 64-49 loss to the Vaqueros (13-6, 0-1) on Dec. 12 in the championship of the Moorpark Classic. After trailing 35-33 at the half, Moorpark outscored the visitors 45-31 in the final 20 minutes, thanks to a decisive advantage in field-goal shooting (50 to 30 percent).

“In every loss, good will come out of it,” said Krul, who coached at Moorpark prior to coming to SBCC in 2004-05. “We’re good when we rebound and play defense but we didn’t do either today.”

SBCC was outrebounded 40-35 and the 78 points allowed were the third-highest of the season.

The Vaqueros have a bye on Saturday, then host L.A. Pierce (Wed.) and Ventura (Jan. 15) in the Sports Pavilion.
