Press defense sparks Bishop to lopsided victory

Bishop Diego’s press defense overwhelmed Grace Brethren in the first half, and the Cardinals romped to a 48-23 victory in a Frontier League boys basketball opener at Bishop on Friday night.

“We pressed in the first half and that caused some difficulty for them,” Bishop coach Dean Prophet said.

The Cardinals had six steals in the first half and rolled to a 33-8 lead.

Elias Munoz led Bishop with 10 points, while Spencer Shull and Paul Garcia scored seven each and Ben Kwock added six points.

Noah Tack pulled down seven rebounds and Alex Ramirez had six boards, five of them offensive rebounds.

Bishop (10-5, 1-0) will get a much tougher test Saturday as it plays Mission Prep at 6 p.m.

“It’ll be a good test for us to see what kind of improvements we’ve made,” said Prophet.
