White gets MVP, Royals get tourney title

Thayer White came through with another solid game for San Marcos’ boys basketball team on Saturday, leading the Royals to the Coast Union Tournament title with a 70-62 decision over Hoover.

White tallied 16 points and four assists in the championship game and was named MVP of the tournament that saw the Royals go 4-0 and score over 70 points in the last three.  White totaled 45 points, 29 rebounds and 12 assists in the four games.

“Thayer lead our team with his aggressiveness, vocal leadership and versatility,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley. “He has the heart of a lion yet plays with poise and maturity.”

San Marcos reached 70 points for a third straight game by shooting 71 percent from the field in the final quarter.

Christian Mkpado and Johnny Manzo were All-Tournament selections. Chad Ridenour wasn’t all-tournament but scored a team-high 20 points in the championship game.

“Our five starters were phenomenal once again,” Bradley said. “We played two incredibly talented and athletic teams today and only turned the ball over 20 times while shooting 60 percent. I’m very proud of our team’s ability
to execute on both ends of the court.”

San Marcos defeated Grant High 70-47 in its first game on Saturday. Mkpado and Manzo shouldered the scoring load in that one as both registered season-highs with 20 and 25 points, respectively. Both recorded double-doubles, with Mkpado pulling down 11 rebounds and Manzo 10.

San Marcos is now 8-1 on the season.
