Vom Steeg given a new contract by UCSB

UCSB's Tim Vom Steeg

UCSB men’s soccer coach Tim Vom Steeg has accepted a new multi-year contract, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mark W. Massari announced Thursday.

No dollar figures were released.

Vom Steeg has created a passionate soccer culture in Santa Barbara, UCSB has led the nation in attendance for college soccer the last four years.

He’s guided the Gauchos to nine straight NCAA Tournaments, two College Cups and one national championship in his 12 years as head coach.

“Much like the entire campus, Tim and his staff are driven not just to compete at the highest level, but to win,” Massari said. “We are fast becoming what the model soccer program – supported by a great campus and community – should be. More great times at Harder and championships are ahead. It’s going to be an exciting ride.”

The two-time NSCAA National Coach of the Year and three-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year has guided UCSB to a 171-66-25 record (.700) during his 12 years at the helm. His Gauchos were the Division I National Champions in 2006 and national runners-up in 2004.

Vom Steeg has posted 11 winning seasons and led UCSB to its only 20-win season in program history in 2004 when the Gauchos went 21-2-2.

“I appreciate the commitment the university and athletic department have made to me and the program,” Vom Steeg said. “I’m excited about the challenge of coaching a team that is expected to compete for a national championship and to have such a loyal fan base that supports our efforts to reach this lofty goal.”

Vom Steeg’s name was mentioned in soccer blogs as a possible candidate for the job opening at North Carolina State.

Vom Steeg is the Big West’s winningest coach (during conference membership) and has steered the Gauchos to six conference titles and their first league tournament title this season. He has coached 15 Division I All-Americans, 26 All-Far West Region honorees, six Big West Offensive Players of the Year, three Midfielders of the Year, seven Defenders of the Year, five Goalkeepers of the Year and five Freshmen of the Year and has had 83 players earn All-Big West accolades.

The UCSB alum was also a driving force in bringing the 2010 NCAA Men’s College Cup to Meredith Field at Harder Stadium, which will be played this Friday and Sunday.

It marks the first time in 35 years that a national championship event will be held on the UCSB campus.

UCSB has just completed almost $2 million in capital improvements to Meredith Field and Harder Stadium, which includes the new Curtice Gate entrance, a new concessions stand, a state of the art scoreboard with video capabilities and a refurbished press box.
