Underwood, Bernardi score twice for Cardinals

Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team scored five times on Saturday and matched Viewpoint for fifth place at the Grace Brethren Tournament after a 2-2 draw couldn’t be broken by penalty kicks.

According to the tournament rule book, only five penalty kicks are allowed in a shootout. Each team had converted two after five attempts to the game ended as a tie. The Cardinals beat Frazier Mountain in their first game of the day 3-1.

“We were pretty banged up, but we survived,” said Bishop head coach Brent Gonsalves, who was working with an empty bench.

Elisa Bernardi and Lauren Underwood both scored two goals on the day and Natalie Durtche recorded the fifth on a penalty kick against Viewpoint.

Bernardi opened the day’s scoring by giving Bishop a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute over Frazier Mountain. Underwood followed up with her first to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

Bernardi scored quickly again in the second game versus Viewpoint. This one was even quicker than the first, coming in the third minute.

“It was a great, great goal,” Gonsalves said.

In the second half, Bernardi created another great opportunity for the Cardinals by getting a foul called inside the penalty area. Durtche converted the PK.

“We played really, really good soccer,” said Gonsalves, noting that it was the best tournament result for the Cardinals in his four years as coach there.”We moved the ball around well. We attacked well.”

The Cardinals play again on Wednesday against Thacher.
