Scoring woes plague Warriors at Buena Tournament

Carpinteria struggled with some holiday vacation rustiness and went winless in two matches at the Buena New Year’s Soccer Tournament on Wednesday.

The Warriors played Buena to a scoreless draw and fell to Camarillo 3-1 in pool play.

“We’re a little rusty,” Carpinteria coach Danny Torres said. “We have some guys still out on vacation and one guy was sick and didn’t make it. But the core of the team is there. Obviously, they’re on varsity for a reason.”

Against Buena, a team Carpinteria beat 3-0 earlier in the season, the Warriors struggled putting the ball away.

“Our attack was there, we just can’t put it in the back of the net,” said Torres, who noted his team scored 21 goals in its first eight matches. “It’s frustrating for the boys because they put pressure on themselves.”

The Warriors’ goal against Camarillo was an own goal.

Torres said he saw some good things from his all-sophomore back line, but “overall we just didn’t play well.”

The Warriors (5-1-3) finish up the tournament on Thursday.
