Scioscia to speak at UCSB baseball fundraiser

UCSB will continue its tradition of opening the college baseball season with an exclusive engagement to benefit the Gaucho baseball program.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia will be the featured speaker at a Jan. 28 event being tabbed as “A Night with an Angel.”

The event will take place at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion.

Much like last year’s highly successful evening with Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda, the dinner will raise funds for upgrades to UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, home to both the Gauchos and the Santa Barbara Foresters.

The Gauchos recently installed a new infield turf surface for the 2011 season along with numerous other improvements.

Along with Scioscia, the event will include the introduction of the 2011 Gaucho squad and remarks by Foresters manager Bill Pintard. The night will be hosted by Josh Suchon, who is also the pre and postgame radio voice for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

UCSB alums, including several in professional baseball, will also be in attendance. Former Gaucho standouts in the majors include St. Louis Cardinals infielder Skip Schumaker, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Chris Valeka, Colorado Rockies outfielder Ryan Spilborghs and Michael Young, a six-time All-Star and a member of the American League champion Texas Rangers.

“A Night with an Angel” will give fans an intimate opportunity to share an evening with one of baseball’s biggest stars. Space is limited and seats can be reserved now with a minimal deposit. An auction will be included in the night’s activities.
