Royals top off opening week in SLO

San Marcos’ boys basketball team bested San Luis Obispo 67-59 for third place at the SLO Kiwanis Tournament on Saturday, which left the Royals with a 4-1 record after their first week of the regular season.

Johnny Manzo recorded a double-double for San Marcos with 17 points and  11 rebounds. Christian Mkpado just missed one himself, collecting 14 points and nine rebounds, while Thayer White was also close with 13 points and eight rebounds, five assists.

“Our big three had a great tournament with Christian leading the way,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley. “Christian demanded double teams in the paint, so Johnny and Thayer created matchup nightmares for everyone. Today Johnny had the mismatch against SLO because they had a smaller guard defending him but Thayer has been playing like a man possessed. He’s getting rebounds with authority and scoring on a nice mix of drives, post ups, put-backs and free throws.”

San Marcos plays again at the Coast Union Tournament in Paso Robles. The Royals open up against Morro Bay on Thursday.
