Michigan stuns Maryland, earns first College Cup berth

The Maize and Blue is coming to Santa Barbara.

Fabio Pereira scored in the third minute of the second overtime to lift 10th-seeded Michigan to a 3-2 upset victory over No. 2 Maryland on Saturday in College Park, Md., to qualify for its first NCAA Men’s College Cup.

Michigan joins North Carolina for college soccer’s Final Four at UCSB’s Harder Stadium on Dec. 10 and 12. The two other spots will be filled later Saturday. No. 6 Cal plays at third-seeded Akron and No. 8 UCLA visits top-ranked Louisville.

Pereira received a cross from Harmoody Saad at the far post and beat Maryland goalkeeper Zac MacMath with a sliding shot inside the post.

Maryland, the ACC Tournament champion, tied the score in the 79th minute on a goal by Jason Herrick.

The Terrapins led 1-0 at halftime on Casey Townsend’s volley from just inside the 18-yard box.

But Michigan, the Big Ten Tournament champion, equalized nine minutes into the second half on a goal by Jeff Quijano and took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute on Justin Meram’s goal.

Michigan improves to 17-4-3 while Maryland ends its season at 19-3-1.
