Less is more for Royals’ school record

San Marcos’ boys basketball team had its way with Coast Union on Friday, orchestrating a 72-10 rout at the Coast Union Tournament.

The ten points allowed was a school record for the Royals, easily lowering the previous best of 19 points.

“We really made strides today communicating on defense and pressuring the ball,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley. “Holding them to four baskets was quite impressive.”

On offense, Kevin Vasquez recorded a career-high 18 points while Kevin Hempy posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Spencer Johnson almost out-did them all, just missing a triple-double with eight points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

“Spencer really managed the game well tonight with the best all-around performance this year,” Bradley said. “The Kevins were awesome today. Vasquez was on fire from three and really got out in transition while Hempy boarded and shot extremely well.”

San Marcos (6-1) will meet Grant High on Saturday at 10 a.m.
