Johnson’s key play helps lift Royals

Hailie Johnson came from behind to break up an Irvine counterattack and then scored a tough goal at the  other end to propel the San Marcos girls water polo team to a 9-8 win at Irvine on Friday.

Johnson’s huge play gave the Royals a 7-5 lead in the third quarter.

“That was pretty nice,” said San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth. “That really changed the tide of the game. It was a great exchange.”

The Koper sisters, Rose and Hannah, led the Royals with three goals apiece, and goalie Alex Brown played a strong game with seven saves and four steals..

“The girls really played well tonight. They did a good job,” said Roth.

San Marcos (4-3) is back in action today against Long Beach Poly and Tesoro.
