DP has too much firepower for San Marcos

Jamie Neushul tossed in six goals, and Dos Pueblos roared out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 17-6 Channel League girls water polo win at San Marcos on Tuesday.

The win extends DP’s winning streak to 39 matches going back to 2008.

The Chargers (3-0, 1-0) faced a scrambling San Marcos defense at the start and still managed to score. They had six goals in the first four minutes of the opening period with Neushul scoring two of them.

“She was just on,” DP coach Chris Parrish said of Neushul. “She was the recipient of some good passes.”

It was frustrating start for the Royals (3-4, 0-2).

“We come out at the beginning of the game and we have a really good front-court defense,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said. “We defend really well for the whole possession, and with four-seconds left on the shot clock we allow a cross-cage lob that goes in. That’s how good DP is. You think you have them contained, you think everything’s OK and they throw something up; they whip up something special for you in the last seconds of the shot clock.”

The Royals regrouped after a timeout and got back in the game by scoring three unanswered goals.

“At times, I thought we had some really good moments of offense and chemistry, working well as a team,” Roth said. “I was pleased with some of the things we did.”

Hannah Koper carried the offense for San Marcos with four goals.

On defense, goalie Alex Brown made some tough saves against the Chargers’ sharpshooters.

Parrish was impressed with San Marcos’ play.

“Their game plan worked really well against us,” he said. “They turned a bunch of ejections and their movement offense worked really well. They have some young personnel that I think will improve quite a bit during the season. I’d like to see San Marcos do really well this year.

“For us,” he added, “we have some people that just can’t be guarded all the time. No matter how hard you try, they create shots, open opportunities for other players and score goals. They make it look easy but it’s not necessarily all that easy.”
