CIF Polls: Basketball rankings unveiled

The first boys and girls basketball polls of the season were released on Monday, and Dos Pueblos’ girls and San Marcos’ boys found themselves as the area’s highest-rated.

The Chargers (8-1) open up as the No. 2 team in Division II-A, two spots ahead of Santa Barbara High. The Chargers and the Dons have already met once this season, with DP taking the Lompoc Tournament title over the Dons. But Santa Barbara bounced back this last weekend to take the Gold Coast Tournament title, while the Chargers placed fifth.

San Marcos’ boys team is off to an 8-1 start and is fresh off a tournament championship at the Coast Union Tournament. The Royals were given the No. 10 ranking in Div. III-A.

Bishop Diego’s boys basketball team has a higher ranking than San Marcos but in a lower division. The Cardinals start out at No. 6 in Div. IV-AA. Carpinteria’s boys team is No. 11 in Div. IV-A.

Bishop Diego’s girls team is No. 3 in Division V-A, trailing Chadwick and No. 1 Pasadena Poly.

There was movement in the boys soccer polls as Dos Pueblos and Carpinteria both dropped two spots while Cate rocketed up to No. 2 in Division VII.

The Rams (5-0) went 4-0 last week, including three wins during the Soccer Town Showcase against Harvard-Westlake, Costa Mesa and San Luis Obispo. Mammoth is the No. 1 team in Div. VII.

The Chargers are No. 5 in Division I thanks to an 8-1-1 start. Dos Pueblos had been undefeated until its last match, a 1-0 loss to new No. 3 Cabrillo/Long Beach.

Dos Pueblos’ girls soccer team is also No. 5, but in Division II. The Chargers are 6-1 on the season, thanks in large part to 10 goals from Brandie Harris.

There were no changes to the Division I girls water polo poll, as Dos Pueblos retained its strangle-hold on the No. 1 position and Santa Barbara remains at No. 4.
