Chargers go down to defeat for first time

Dos Pueblos' Chris Castillo puts a header back across the goal on a corner kick.

Dos Pueblos’ boys soccer team was stuck with its first loss on Saturday, falling to Cabrillo/Long Beach 1-0 after defeating Bullard 1-0 earlier in the day.

The Chargers, ranked No. 3 in CIF-SS Division I, started the season unbeaten in their first nine games but conceded a goal to Cabrillo in the 22nd minute that stood up.

“I think the guys took it well,” said Chargers head coach Tovi Eliasen. “Cabrillo long beach was a very good team. we knew they were going to be one of stiffer tests.”

Dos Pueblos and Cabrillo finished 2-1 in the Soccer Town Showcase while Bullard was winless.

Ivan Luna scored his sixth goal of the season against Bullard in the very first minute. Luna converted a throw-in from Kyle Schmechel into an impressive volley from outside the box. The shot left the Bullard keeper, Cesar Hernandez, standing still as the ball hit the back of the net.

“Schmechel threw it a little high, I headed it, and then a one touch volley. That was it,” said a modest Luna.

Against Cabrillo, without key offensive cogs in Danny Rowell and Vicente Perez, Dos Pueblos wasn’t able to create many chances after having out-shot their opponents in every game this season.

“We were close a couple of times, but only a couple,” Eliasen said.

Dos Pueblos (8-1-1) plays twice next week, starting with Pacifica on Tuesday.
