Chargers’ bench provides needed boost

A tired Dos Pueblos received a significant boost from its bench on Thursday, which helped the Chargers come from behind to defeat Nordhoff 72-65 in a Gold Coast Tournament game.

The Chargers were trailing for most of the game before Jessica Escalante, Talitha Draper and Stefanie Salinas helped put DP over the top in the final quarter.

Escalante led the Chargers in scoring with 18 points but Salinas came off the bench to score the team’s second-highest point total of 13, which was matched by Chiara DiMarco. Jasmine Mata added 12.

“Our bench came through,” said Chargers head coach Jelani Hicks. “We had a lot of contributors today.”

DP has been playing a lot of basketball in the early season. The Chargers played four games in their opening week and are playing another five more this week.

“We’re running out of gas, that’s what it looks like,” Hicks said.

Dos Pueblos improves to 6-1 on the season.
