Cardinals’ eruption in first quarter puts away La Reina

Bishop Diego broke open a one-point game in the first quarter with a 12-0 run and roared to a 76-32 victory over La Reina in a pool play game at the Fillmore girls basketball tournament.

“It was much better after last night’s game,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “It’s always nice to end the first quarter on a 12-0 run.

The Cardinals led 10-9 before they pulled away. They led 39-21 at halftime.

Allison Breuer recorded her first double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Essence Thornhill scored 15 points and Karina Valencia added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Bishop plays Thacher on Friday in its final pool play game.
