Vines produces 32 points to help SBCC win first game

Sophomore Chris Vines tossed in a career-high 32 points on Saturday afternoon, leading SBCC to an 86-77 men’s basketball triumph over Victor Valley in the third-place game of the Glendale Tip-Off Tournament.

Forward Richard Somdah had 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Steven Saenz added 11 points for the Vaqueros (1-1). Josh Guild scored nine, including a big bucket down the stretch.

Vines, a former San Marcos High standout, hit 10-of-16 from the field and 10-15 from the free-throw line. He averaged 26 points in the two-game tournament.

Trailing 24-20 with 6:45 to go in the first half, the Vaqueros went on a 13-0 run and never lost the lead. Victor Valley pulled within one at 62-61 with 6:20 to play but SBCC responded with a 15-7 run to boost the margin back to nine at 77-68.

Eric Braun and Somdah each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch. The Vaqueros had 20 assists, led by Jared Green (5), Somdah (4) and Braun (4). They also forced 26 turnovers, leading to 31 points.

“We really responded well after Friday’s game (a 28-point loss to Compton),” said SBCC coach Morris Hodges. “We managed situations better today.”

The Vaqueros will take on Miramar at the Southwestern Tournament on Friday in Chula Vista.
