Vaqueros punished for sloppy play

After a strong start, SBCC couldn’t overcome 26 turnovers on Friday in an 85-70 men’s basketball loss to Miramar at the Southwestern Tournament in Chula Vista.

Richard Somdah had 21 points and six rebounds for the Vaqueros (1-2), who jumped out to a 16-7 lead. They didn’t score for the next five minutes, however, and committed six turnovers while the Jets went on a 13-0 run to go ahead 20-16.

Miramar led 43-33 at halftime and the Vaqueros got within five, 63-58, at the 5:30 mark but couldn’t get any closer.

Steve Saenz added 12 points for SBCC.

“They got 23 points off our 26 turnovers and a lot of those turnovers were unforced,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.”

The Vaqueros will take on L.A. Valley in the third-place game on Saturday at noon.
